Not many people, including business analysts themselves can agree on a standard description, a typical set of skills, methods of proper training or well-defined career path for business analyst positions.
Nevertheless, almost everyone who ever worked on a 18-month project to develop software to agree on the importance of the role of business analyst for the success of the project.
So, although all agree that good business analysts are extremely valuable, and that cultivate a business analyst talent is essential to effective IT operations, a new report Forrester Research says that enterprises need to do more. To truly take advantage of all that business analysts have to offer, you must answer the career conundrum that many business analysts face: What next?
In June, 2008 report “Business-oriented business analyst, Forrester in Andy Salunga offers several possible avenues for future business direction for business-oriented business analysts.
First, it must be noted that Forrester categorises business intelligence (BAS) in three roles: a business-oriented BAS, which focus on specific functions, such as, HR, finance and supply chain, IT-oriented BAS, which are reported in it, and business technology BAS, who possesses a combination of extensive business experience and operational know-how, as well as the high level of technology know-how.

“Lean” Six Sigma “has become relatively well known and highly adopted the philosophy of business management, while CMMI, ITIL and other methodologies were significant traction within it,” writes Salunga. “Traditional business intelligence must strive to understand and use Lean Six Sigma tools and methods to improve processes and enable broad-scale innovative business. Business technology analysts also require a profound knowledge of CMMI, ITIL and other methodologies to improve productivity and bring it into line with the business.”
Business analysts should increase technological knowledge and skills.
Salunga argues that both the business-oriented IT-based quarries would require “a higher degree of master of technology, particularly in technology BPM and SOA. In addition, business-oriented BAS should develop a process modeling using the skills of business process modeling presentation (BPMN) and became ADEPT in the analysis using the tools.
“Business technology analysts will have to deepen their BPM and business rules technology knowledge,” he writes, “and will be able to make the business process models created by their business partners in an executable logic.”
